Basketball Season Reminders
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the meeting last Monday. Below is follow up and reminders for the season. Also remember that registered sport officials in Michigan represent only about 0.1% of the entire state population! Be on time, always act professionally, never stop learning, and most of all, have fun this season! 1) We are sharing the NFHS Faking Being Fouled Best Practices document. It also endorsed by the MHSAA and it’s on their website as well. To help make implementation of this rule easier, remember that we do NOT want stop play immediately IF it takes the advantage away from the OFFENDED team. Wait until the offended team no longer has the advantage and THEN stop play to report the flop. We stop play immediately and report the call only if we are not taking the advantage away from the offended team. Otherwise, it will be a delayed whistle. https://www.nfhs.org/media/7213020/faking-being-fouled-best-practices.pdf 2) The MHSAA has produced a new basketball officials manual for 2024-25 and it’s excellent. New and veteran officials should both take time to review it: https://www.mhsaa.com/sites/default/files/Officials/Basketball/Michigan_BK_Officiating_Manual-2024-2025.pdf?time=1731011442344 3) Don’t forget that the MHSAA has a Sport Specific Content page for basketball page. Go to the link from the main MHSAA page by clicking “Officials” at the top of the MHSAA page, then “Sports Specific Content” and then “Basketball.” Or simply click the direct link below. MHSAA is constantly updating the page. It is where the postseason test will be posted along with other extremely helpful materials. https://www.mhsaa.com/i-am/officials/sports-specific-content/basketball-officials-information 4) A Better Official is a YouTube page that focuses on only high school basketball rules and mechanics. They publish new content regularly including multiple videos that are only 3 minutes long that go over individual new 24-25 rules. Watch them all and go back to the page often! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLI4T_SHvEVdekqAKvW-rxQ 5) Remember to reach out to the assignor if there are any major issues or controversies in your contests (e.g. player or coach ejections, fights, etc.). You want them to hear from you first before coaches and/or the school. Their contact information is in the link below and it will also be on the game assignment you accepted in ArbiterSports. https://metrodetroitathleticofficials.com/?page_id=28 6) Remember that one of the requirements to be tournament eligible is to be a member in good standing with a local approved association. Again this year, electronic payment is possible! Most major apps are available including Zelle, Google Pay, and PayPal. Please send payment to mdaomike@gmail.com for Zelle, Google Pay, and PayPal. For Venmo use @Mike-Schram-19Include your name, officials ID and your preferred email address.
